Allen Roger
Mahler
Oct 11, 1926 — Sep 26, 2022
Allen Roger Mahler passed away on September 26, 2022, at the age of 95. He was born October 11, 1926 to Ella Ida Cook Mahler and Alfred Charles Mahler in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy. Upon completing training at Great Lakes Naval Station, he shipped out to the Philippines where he spent the remainder of World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he enrolled in the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He became engaged to Florene Lois Silhavy of Webster Groves, MO, and the two were married on June 30, 1951.
Al worked as a pharmacist in St. Louis, MO for 16 years as he and Flo raised a family of 3 girls. He was a committed fisherman and especially enjoyed trout fishing. Al and Flo loved the natural landscape of Michigan which led to their decision to move there.
Al began working as a pharmacist at Miller's Drug Store in Manistee in the fall of 1966. Always sociable, he enjoyed interacting with the staff and customers. Al joined the Lions Club and he and Flo became active in the First Congregational Church. Al was an active member in World's Worst Fisherman.
He enthusiastically attended choral concerts at Manistee High School and Interlochen. He also enjoyed attending musicals and plays at the Ramsdell Opera House. Al and Flo welcomed their son David in 1971; Al was a devoted father to him. Upon retiring from the Apothecary Shop, Al worked in the pharmacy at Manistee Hospital part time.
After Flo passed away in 2005, Al became the sole caretaker of their son, David (1971-2006). He enjoyed visits from his daughters and grandchildren. Al moved to Green Acres Retirement Facility in 2017 where he quickly endeared himself to the staff and residents. He was beloved by his family and friends because of his graciousness, kindness, and sense of humor; he will be missed by all. He is survived by daughters Sarah Kraaz (Jack); Jane Kuipers (Kris); and Alice Harris (John); grandchildren Cecily and Christina Hughes; Patricia and Julian Kuipers; Tyler (Erica), Nathan, and Parker Harris; great-granddaughter Sabrina Harris; and niece M.J. Willard.
A Celebration of Allen's Life will be held on Saturday March 11, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Manistee with the Reverend Elizabeth Hoy officiating. Final Inurnment will take place in the columbarium at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee where members of the United Veterans Council Ritual Team will conduct military honors. A luncheon will be held at the church following the services.
In lieu of flowers, Al requested gifts be made to the Lions Club Leader Dog Program, the First Congregational Church, and the American Youth Foundation (Camp Miniwanca).
The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
