Florence
Rutowski
Apr 23, 1927 — Dec 28, 2017
Florence (Edel) Bruno Rutowski died peacefully surrounded by family on December 28, 2017 at Spectrum Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
She was born on April 23, 1927 in Manistee Michigan daughter of the late Albert & Victoria Edel. As a child, Florence spent a lot of time helping her parents and grandparents Katherine & Wojiech Gutowski on Melitzer Street. She had fond memories of those two days, especially when her grandfather took her to 5 th avenue beach to collect driftwood. On their way home she got to ride in the small wagon on top of the wood.
In her late teens, Florence worked for Mr. & Mrs. Freedman keeping house and caring for their aged mother. She continued in this line of work when Dr. Olgilvie died leaving a young family in need of a special nanny. During this time Florence became close friends with his wife Doris and put her domestic skills to good use, especially pie making. Florence also worked for Dr. Roger & Marilyn Patterson for over 30 years. They continued their friendship until her death. She also worked for many other families in the area. She was a very conscientious worker always going above and beyond to help make life easier for others.
On May 10, 1947 Florence married George Bruno, the love of her life, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. They were married for 42 years. A few years after their marriage, Florence & George moved back to the farm homestead to care for her parents, the farm and the animals. He preceded her in death on August 1988.
Florence and George traveled to Spain for their 25 th wedding anniversary with the Knights of Columbus. They were loyal supporters of Manistee Catholic Central and traveled to many football and basketball games. Florence continued to support M.C.C. thru the years. She was an active member of M.C.C. Mom's Club Pinochle Party, Rosary Society and a loyal supporter of her church St. Joseph.
She was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and she helped with the paczki fund raisers. She claimed that she got the job of frying the paczki because she could stand the heat from the fryer. When her first husband George was living they made paczki and delivered them on Christmas Eve as gifts to her employers.
Florence married Frank Rutowski on July 3, 1998. They were married for three years until his death in 2001.
Florence enjoyed dancing, listening to music, cooking, baking, gardening, shopping, playing cards, (especially pinochle) playing the slots, watching catholic channel EWTN and praying the rosary. She enjoyed reading, taking road trips with her niece Jeanette and late husband Tom Maue visiting family and exploring Michigan. She also liked to go shopping and to lunch with nieces Sally Malkowski and Jeanette. Florence was very independent and driving her car Matilda helped her enjoy her favorite activities until the end.
Florence is survived by many nieces and nephews, Frank's children and special friend and helper Joanne Adamski.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Marie (Stanley) Kuhn, Rose (Jim) Goodrich, Frances (Frank) Goodrich and Alice (Harry) Kolanowski, Two brothers, John (Elizabeth) Edel and Tony (Isabelle) Edel, as well as three younger sibling brothers, her husband George Bruno, Clayton Anderson a dear friend, husband Frank Rutowski and nephew Tom Maue.
