James Roy Norton, 85, of Wellston, Michigan, died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Byron Norton, 46; his grandson, Cody Hull, age 33; three brothers, seven sisters his parents, Mary Anna (Wood) Norton and William Norton of West Virginia.

James is survived by his wife, E. Jean (Wingate) Norton, for more than 66 years; also of Wellston, his two grandsons, Christopher James Norton and Benjamin Mikel Norton; one sister, Gloria Anita Rhoads of Ohio. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive him.

James was a star football player at Welch High School, Welch, West Virginia. He was a Commander of the VA Post in Byron, Michigan and a volunteer firefighter in Wellston, Michigan for many years. James was a Sargent in the U.S. Army and was a Sharpshooter in Vietnam. He also took lessons and was a light aircraft pilot.

A celebration of life in James’ honor was held Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at Natahka in Irons, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their sympathies are asked to consider a memorial contribution to the American Diabetes Association in his honor.
