Obituary

Norma Jean Satal (Norma VanIttersum) Age 91, died peacefully Feb 5, 2021 at Nancy's House AFC in Manistee, MI. She was born Feb 24, 1929, in Hazelton Twp, MI, the fourth child of the late Ruth (Safford) and Merle Haughton.  Growing up, Norma remembered visiting her grandparents farm where she picked and ate apples and peaches, moved frequently attending new schools.  The family moved to IL in the early '40s.  Norma married first husband, Jerome (Jerry) Satal on Feb 26, 1949 at St John Vianney Catholic Church in Cicero, IL.   Moving to Burton, MI in 1952 they became members of Blessed Sacrament followed by Holy Family in the 70s.  After raising their children, the couple enjoyed sailing the Great Lakes in the summer for up to a month at a time.  Additionally, they ventured on road trips to CA, FL and IL.  Upon retirement they moved to Onekama where they became active members of St Joseph Catholic Church and founders of the food pantry there.

Faith, family and friends were very important to Norma. She felt her faith gave her strength during difficult times and strongly believed in the power of prayer. She enthusiastically attended church services and events.  Frequently donating baked goods and bazaar items.  Norma's participation in the church also led her to form many lasting friendships that she treasured.

Norma will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother grandmother and great grandmother.  She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  The grandchildren have many fond memories of grandma coming bringing cookies.  As well as, 'going over the river and through the woods…'  knowing her loving hugs, beautiful smile and twinkle in her eye awaited their arrival.  Norma enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren including coloring, riding bikes, boat rides, canoeing, shopping and many times the 4th of July parade and fireworks in Manistee.  Was happy to watch great grandchildren play, hold and give warm loving hugs.

Since she so liked spending time with family and friends, Norma had a passion and talent for entertaining.  Delighted when visitors stopped over and thrilled to have out of town guests.  Always maintaining a neat and clean house and making sure everyone was well fed.  She strived to make her guests feel welcome.   Never sitting until she knew everyone had what they needed.  Norma was a wonderful cook and especially liked baking treats.  Always with homemade cookies ready for the grandchildren.  She would bring MI fruits to IL when visiting her four sisters there and baked memorable desserts while staying at their homes.   She was known for her coffee cakes, apple slices, strawberry pizza and potato salad to name a few.

After 49 yrs of marriage, husband, Jerry preceded Norma in death on April 15, 1998.  She later married Thomas (Tom) VanIttersum of Onekama on Feb 27, 1999 at Saint Germaine's Catholic Church in St Claire Shores, MI.  They enjoyed 15 yrs together which included travel to Bahamas, CA, FL, Hawaii, IL and TX.  Participated in many St Joseph and Onekama activities.  Tom preceded Norma in death on Oct 14, 2014.
