Steven Carl
Johnson
Feb 16, 1960 — Mar 13, 2024
Steven Carl Johnson of Manistee, Michigan, died suddenly on March 13, 2024, at the age of 64.
He was born, February 16, 1960, in Manistee, to his parents, Robert W. and Marian L. Johnson.
Steve grew up as a typical kid on the Northside of Manistee, making friends and parties out in the woods. He got his start at the Mowry's car dealership, but later joined the Army National Guard to jump start his mechanical career by wrenching on their tanks. Not long after, he enlisted with the Army and married, Dorothy. While stationed in Germany, his first daughter was born. Then while stationed in Louisiana, his second daughter was born. When his term of service with the Army was up, he moved the family home to Manistee. While back home, he stayed active with the National Guard, working in the Manistee, Cadillac and Grayling installations. He pursued his Master's Electrician License for many years, supported by his family at home, as he was often away for this work. After years working solely on electrical, he moved on to other occupations. Later, he found a family working at the Little River Casino. He had retired in December, but he was touched by all those that stopped to tell him what an impact he had on the business and their own lives.
Steve never stopped tinkering and he was always ready to play. Hobby rockets and remote-control planes, RC cars and boats were how he stayed young. It was his tinkering that brought him into other people's lives. He worked on cars for fun when he was younger, but as he aged, he spent time making sure (just about) everyone's car was safe enough to be driven. He was a man that believed that we were to look out for one another. His phone was always ringing, people had questions and needed help, and he was happy to be there. He was there, when the elderly ladies needed their outlets fixed, getting a car running for folks just trying to make the ends meet, and for family when a treasured toy needed TLC. The loss of Steve will truly be felt deeply and by so many.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 43 years, Dorothy Johnson, daughters, Diane (Lee) Johnson and Sandra (Jordan) Skiera, along with two granddaughters, Jozelynn and Emberlynn Skiera. He is also survived by, his mother, Marian Johnson, two sisters, Margaret (Jeff) Block and Christine Stambaugh, and his brother, LaVerne Johnson, sister-in-law, Julie Schroeder. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. His lifelong friend and cohort, Michael Tomaszewski, was just one of many close friends that he held dear.
He was preceded in death by, his father, Robert W. Johnson, Sr., as well as siblings Robert W. Johnson Jr., Sharon Fortin, and Mary Thebault. Also, his father and mother-in-law, Bernard and Dawn Schroeder, for whom he cared so deeply.
In Steven's honor, the family will receive friends at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, on Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon.
The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
